Men&#8217;s Sport Footwear Director.&nbsp;\u201c<\/strong>He wanted to create a footwear system that could help players generate more rotational power. Whatever margin we could find, it was our job to find it. He knew we had the tools, the expertise, and the curiosity to find new solutions through footwear.<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">The Science Behind the Swing<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Golf swings demand power across three planes of movement: vertical, horizontal, and rotational. The Jordan Brand team, led by <strong>designer<\/strong>&nbsp;<a class=\"break-word hover:text-super hover:decoration-super dark:hover:text-superDark dark:hover:decoration-superDark underline decoration-from-font underline-offset-1 transition-all duration-300\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/yoon-choi-b1288242\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yoon Choi<\/a>, recognized that maximizing rotational force was key to unlocking greater driving distance.&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Rotational movement made us think about the responsiveness of Air in a different way,<strong>\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Choi<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/about.nike.com\/en\/stories\/jordan-brand-air-rev-design\">explains<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Giving that starter-block effect off the back foot for rotational movement. Then, we could use a firmer foam on the lead foot to help brake the body and maintain balance.<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"my-0\">To explore this concept,&nbsp;Nike\u2019s NXT \u201cSpace Kitchen\u201d&nbsp;team joined forces with&nbsp;Grove XXIII\u2019s head golf coach,&nbsp;Darren May, at Michael Jordan\u2019s private course in Florida. There, they tested how propulsive sidewalls and removable cushioning could enhance rotational velocity, even improvising a custom turntable gauge to measure the rotational power generated during a swing.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">From Theory to Innovation<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-0\">The research phase produced promising results. Golfers reported feeling both more secure and more powerful, which, when combined, translate to longer drives. The team experimented with various prototypes, including shoes with lateral Zoom Air&nbsp;units and fang-like traction spikes. While some designs pushed the boundaries of practicality, they proved the concept worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-0\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong>We all knew the system was working. We knew that Zoom Air could be applied in this way to great results<strong>,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/about.nike.com\/en\/stories\/jordan-brand-air-rev-design\">says<\/a> <strong>Choi<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong>But could this be wearable? Or would this ultimately be a science project?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-0\">The breakthrough came with the development of the&nbsp;Flight Lock containment system: a combination of lateral cushioning, a midfoot strap, and a tightening dial on the tongue. This system allowed golfers to customize their support and power transfer, depending on their foot preference.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-xs mt-5 text-base font-[500] first:mt-0 dark:font-[475]\">The Final Product<\/h3>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Feedback from players validated the team\u2019s efforts.&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Every time we started to question what we were doing, we\u2019d hear more feedback validating how players felt stronger in driving the ball further, and they&#8217;d add that the Flight Lock system was comfortable, not a distraction,<strong>\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Choi<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/about.nike.com\/en\/stories\/jordan-brand-air-rev-design\">notes<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong>\u201c<\/strong>For a lot of us, this project represents exactly what&nbsp;<a class=\"break-word hover:text-super hover:decoration-super dark:hover:text-superDark dark:hover:decoration-superDark underline decoration-from-font underline-offset-1 transition-all duration-300\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Bowerman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bowerman<\/a>&nbsp;was doing decades ago with his track spikes: explore a performance benefit, no matter how small, and ruthlessly experiment how to achieve it.<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"my-0\">Michael Jordan\u2019s philosophy of relentless innovation was central to the project\u2019s success. <strong>\u201c<\/strong>MJ told our team from the beginning, \u2018You\u2019re always welcome to come here.
