Embracing the \u201cMebounds\u201d Label<\/strong><\/h3>\n

By now, Chicago Sky<\/a> forward Angel Reese<\/a> has heard the criticisms of her game. Much of it centers on the idea that she\u2019s only good at grabbing rebounds especially her own missed shots. As the Sky<\/a> (3-7) have struggled early this season, the noise has grown louder, even inspiring a new term: \u201cMebounds\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rather than take offense, Reese<\/a> who just notched her first career triple-double has embraced the attention. She\u2019s even applied to trademark \u201cmebounds<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angel Reese<\/strong>, said<\/a>: \u201cWhoever came up with the \u2018mebounds\u2019 thing, y\u2019all ate that up because \u2018mebounds,\u2019 rebounds, \u2018crebounds\u2019 \u2026 anything that comes off that board, it\u2019s mine. And a brand? That\u2019s six figures right there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From Podcast Joke to Trademark<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The phrase \u201cmebounds<\/a>\u201d originated on the Club 520 podcast<\/a>, hosted by Jeff Teague<\/a>, DJ Wells<\/a>, and Brandon \u201cBishop B Hen\u201d Hendricks<\/a>. Hendricks jokingly called Reese\u2019s rebounds \u201cmebounds<\/a>\u201d because of her skill at securing her own misses. While Hendricks later clarified he wasn\u2019t \u201chating,\u201d the phrase caught fire online, and Reese<\/a> quickly moved to capitalize.<\/p>\n

Reese\u2019s team filed a trademark application<\/a> with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. If approved, fans could soon see \u201cmebounds\u201d apparel on the market.<\/p>\n

Record-Breaking Rookie Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Despite the mockery, Reese\u2019s stats are undeniable<\/a>. In her 2024 rookie season, she averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists over 34 games. Her 13.1 rebounds per game led the league and set a new WNBA<\/a> single-season record.<\/p>\n

She broke Sylvia Fowles<\/a>\u2019 rebounding record with a 17-point, 19-rebound game against the Minnesota Lynx<\/a>. Although A\u2019ja Wilson<\/a> later surpassed that mark after Reese\u2019s injury, Reese also became the first player to record three consecutive games with 20-plus rebounds and set the record for most consecutive double-doubles at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in 15 straight games.<\/p>\n

Turning Trolls Into Triumph<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Angel Reese<\/strong>, said<\/a>: \u201cThe trolling? I love when y\u2019all do it because, like, the ideas be good. Like, when y\u2019all have to alter my face and [expletive] because I\u2019m cute, all right, whatever. That doesn\u2019t get me. But when y\u2019all came up with \u2018mebounds\u2019 \u2014 because statistically, all the rebounds that I get aren\u2019t always just mine. They\u2019re, like, the defense\u2019s, too, or somebody else on my team. But, when y\u2019all came up with \u2018mebounds,\u2019 y\u2019all ate \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The trademark filing capped a big weekend for Reese, who recorded her first WNBA triple-double<\/a> with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists in Chicago\u2019s 78-66 win over the Connecticut Sun.<\/p>\n
