  • Heel Slip: Definition & How To Fit It

Heel Slip: Definition & How To Fit It

When your heel slips in a shoe, it can lead to discomfort, blisters, and even accidents. From choosing the right size and style of shoes to breaking them in properly, using insoles and inserts, adjusting laces and straps, adding grip to the bottom of shoes, selecting appropriate socks and hosiery, avoiding shoes with smooth or slippery soles, maintaining shoe condition, seeking professional help when needed, and specific prevention strategies for different types of shoes – we will cover it all.

Understanding the Causes of Heel Slip in Shoes

Heel slip occurs when the back of your foot moves up and down inside the shoe while walking or running. This can be caused by various factors such as shoe size, style, and material. Ill-fitting shoes are a common culprit for heel slip. If your shoes are too big or too small, your foot may not be properly secured, leading to slippage. Additionally, certain shoe styles like high heels or slip-on shoes may inherently have a higher risk of heel slip due to their design. The material of the shoe can also play a role – shoes made from slippery materials or with smooth soles are more likely to cause heel slip.

Choosing the Right Size and Style of Shoes to Prevent Heel Slip

To prevent heel slip, it is crucial to choose shoes that fit properly and have the right design features. When selecting shoes, make sure they are the correct size for your feet. Consider both length and width measurements to ensure a snug fit without being too tight. Different types of shoes may require different sizing considerations – for example, athletic shoes may need a bit more room in the toe box for optimal performance. Additionally, pay attention to the style of the shoe. Shoes with a secure closure system like laces or straps can provide a better fit and reduce the risk of heel slip compared to slip-on styles.

Breaking in New Shoes to Avoid Heel Slip

Breaking in new shoes gradually is essential to prevent heel slip. When you purchase a new pair of shoes, resist the temptation to wear them for extended periods right away. Instead, start by wearing them around the house for short periods to allow your feet to adjust to the new fit and for the shoes to mold to your feet. This will help prevent discomfort and minimize the risk of heel slip when you eventually wear them out. Taking the time to break in your shoes properly can make a significant difference in preventing heel slip and ensuring long-term comfort.

Using Insoles and Inserts to Prevent Heel Slip

Insoles and inserts can be valuable tools in preventing heel slip. There are various types available, each serving different purposes. Cushioned insoles can provide extra padding and support, reducing the likelihood of slippage. Gel inserts can help absorb shock and provide additional comfort. Heel grips or pads can be placed at the back of the shoe to create friction and prevent your foot from sliding. Arch supports can also contribute to overall stability and reduce heel slip. When selecting insoles or inserts, consider your specific needs and the type of shoe you will be wearing them in.

Adjusting Laces and Straps for a Better Fit

Properly adjusting laces and straps can significantly improve the fit of your shoes and prevent heel slip. Different types of shoes may require different adjustments. For shoes with laces, ensure they are tightened adequately but not overly tight, as this can cause discomfort or restrict blood circulation. Pay attention to how you tie your laces – techniques like the “heel lock” method can provide extra security by preventing slippage at the back of the shoe. If your shoes have straps, adjust them to achieve a snug fit without causing pressure points. Experiment with different adjustments until you find the most comfortable and secure fit for your feet.

Adding Grip to the Bottom of Shoes to Prevent Heel Slip

If you find that your shoes lack sufficient traction, adding grip to the bottom can help prevent heel slip. There are various products available for this purpose, such as adhesive grip pads or traction spray. These products can be applied to the sole of the shoe to increase friction and improve stability. When using grip-enhancing products, make sure to follow the instructions carefully and apply them evenly for optimal effectiveness. It is important to note that some shoes may already have adequate grip, so assess your shoes’ traction before resorting to additional measures.

Using Socks and Hosiery to Prevent Heel Slip

The type of socks or hosiery you wear can also play a role in preventing heel slip. Opt for socks or hosiery that provide a snug fit without being too tight or too loose. Look for socks with added grip on the sole or heel area, as these can help reduce slippage. Consider wearing socks made from moisture-wicking materials to keep your feet dry and prevent excess moisture that can contribute to heel slip. Additionally, choose socks or hosiery that are appropriate for the type of shoe you are wearing – for example, thin dress socks may not provide enough cushioning and grip for athletic shoes.

Avoiding Shoes with Smooth or Slippery Soles

Shoes with smooth or slippery soles are more likely to cause heel slip due to their lack of traction. When selecting shoes, pay attention to the sole material and tread pattern. Opt for shoes with rubber or textured soles that provide better grip on various surfaces. Look for shoes designed specifically for activities that require stability, such as hiking or running shoes with aggressive tread patterns. Avoid shoes with soles made from materials like leather or plastic, as they tend to be more slippery. By choosing shoes with better traction, you can significantly reduce the risk of heel slip.

Maintaining the Condition of Shoes to Prevent Heel Slip

Regular maintenance and care of your shoes can help prevent heel slip. Keep your shoes clean and free from dirt or debris that can affect their grip. Regularly inspect the soles for signs of wear and replace them if necessary. If your shoes have become stretched or worn out, consider getting them repaired or replaced to maintain a secure fit. Additionally, store your shoes properly to prevent them from losing their shape or becoming misshapen, which can contribute to heel slip. By taking good care of your shoes, you can prolong their lifespan and ensure they continue to provide a secure and comfortable fit.

Seeking Professional Help for Persistent Heel Slip Issues

If you have tried various prevention strategies and still experience persistent heel slip issues, it may be time to seek professional help. Podiatrists or orthopedic specialists can assess your feet and provide personalized recommendations based on your specific needs. They may suggest custom orthotics or other interventions to address any underlying foot conditions that contribute to heel slip. Additionally, shoe fitting specialists can provide expert guidance on selecting the right type and size of shoes for your feet. Don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals if you continue to struggle with heel slip despite your best efforts.

Tips for Preventing Heel Slip in Different Types of Shoes

Different types of shoes may require specific prevention strategies to combat heel slip effectively. For high heels, consider using gel inserts or cushions at the ball of the foot and heel area to improve comfort and stability. Opt for high heels with ankle straps or secure closures for added support. Sneakers may benefit from lace adjustments using the “heel lock” method and the use of cushioned insoles for enhanced comfort. Boots can be secured with thicker socks or hosiery and may require additional grip on the sole for better traction.

  • New Balance Launches Resale with Archive

New Balance Launches Resale with Archive

New Balance has unveiled Reconsidered, its pioneering resale platform that marks a stride towards sustainable and circular practices in the footwear sector.

To support this endeavor, New Balance partnered with Archive, a technology platform specializing in branded resale, and Tersus Solutions, which provides waterless cleaning technology and textile reclamation solutions for apparel and footwear.

Archive has partnered with a variety of brands including The North Face, which has sold hundreds of thousands of items in the U.S. and Canada through its Renewed program. Oscar De La Renta has also collaborated with Archive for its Encore program, while M.M.LAFLEUR has launched its Second Act initiative.

Other brand partners are Ulla Johnson with its Preloved collection, Hanna Andersson offering Preloved items, Faherty with its Secondwave program, Sandro with Secondhand offerings, and DVF with its Rewrap initiative.

Archive’s approach is to work closely with each brand partner to launch a unique, customized resale business that aligns with the brand’s identity and goals. This collaboration extends to managing various aspects of the resale process, including product identification, photography, pricing, order fulfillment, handling of returns, and in-store take-back programs.

Reconsidered allows customers to trade in their gently worn New Balance shoes either by mail or through in-store drop-off. In exchange for their contributions to this sustainable cycle, customers receive vouchers that can be used towards future purchases of New Balance products. This process ensures that the shoes meet quality and hygiene standards before being offered to new owners. The value of these vouchers is determined by the condition and seasonality of the traded-in footwear.

    How it works?

The process is straightforward for selling on New Balance’s Reconsidered platform:

    1. Customers can trade their footwear via mail or by dropping them off at participating New Balance stores
    2. Each pair of shoes is evaluated based on its condition and seasonality
    3. In return, customers receive vouchers they can use towards future New Balance purchases
    4. These pre-loved shoes are then cleaned as needed, ensuring they meet stringent hygiene and quality standards
    5.  They are listed for sale on the Reconsidered platform

This process allows the company to maintain direct control over the quality, packaging, and pricing of its products, ensuring that the brand’s message and image remain consistent.

Luxury fashion brands have also entered the pre-loved market, with Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Chloé, and Balenciaga building their own sites and services to buy and sell second-hand items.

This resale program aligns with New Balance’s broader sustainability goals, such as ensuring that all cotton and leather used are from preferred sources and aiming for 50% of their polyester to be recycled by 2025. Furthermore, New Balance is working towards sourcing 100% renewable electricity for owned operations by the same year.
