Merrell is marking Karl Bushby’s return to Hull with a story about the hiking shoes that accompanied the later stages of his Goliath Expedition. In its November 2 announcement, the brand says Bushby completed the journey home after setting out from Chile in 1998.
According to Merrell’s account, Bushby first tried its footwear in 2013 while crossing the United States. He subsequently sought out the Moab, using both waterproof and breathable versions through Central Asia, Europe and the final stretch home.
The distinction matters to the brand story: this was an adventurer’s choice made during an ongoing journey. Merrell is now connecting that experience with the durability and versatility it promotes for the Moab franchise. The company’s account describes approximately 31,000 miles across 30 countries over the complete expedition.
For an outdoor footwear business, a long-used shoe carries a different kind of narrative value from a launch-day demonstration. The homecoming gives Merrell a human story around an established product family, whose current generation includes the Moab 3.
