Connecticut Sun and TD Bank just hosted a “Bank on Her” event to empower young girls with money skills and self-confidence through hands-on activities and community engagement.
Promoting Confidence and Financial Literacy
On September 9 in Stamford, 40 girls aged 10-14 from the Boys and Girls Club participated in the “Bank on Her” event, which kicked off with a panel featuring representatives from the Connecticut Sun, TD Bank, and the University of Bridgeport. The topics included self-confidence, responsible money management, and accessible financial resources for youth. Panelists encouraged girls to set goals and believe in their ability to take charge of their finances as they grow.
Learning by Doing (Interactive Workshops)
Following the discussion, the girls joined vision board sessions to visualize their dreams and learned about essential financial habits in a creative, supportive setting. One activity, “HER Word,” had each participant create a bracelet decorated with words that represented the confidence they wanted to project—reminding them every day of their personal strengths. The hands-on approach made financial education tangible and memorable.
To reinforce the lessons, attendees earned “Bank on Her Bucks” for asking questions, engaging in group activities, and embracing new concepts. They then used this make-believe currency to “purchase” Connecticut Sun merchandise, giving them practical experience in financial decision-making while celebrating their achievements.
TD Bank: Community Support and Financial Access
TD Bank, a major U.S. financial institution, is the Sun’s exclusive financial services sponsor and is leveraging this relationship to foster growth, inclusiveness, and empowerment through educational programs for young women. The bank’s broader sponsorship of the Sun includes bringing underserved youth to live games, supporting small business entrepreneurs, and spotlighting financial literacy content featuring the team’s players.
Sheryl McQuade, Regional President of the New England Metro, TD Bank, said:
“Through this sponsorship, we reinforce our dedication to women’s sports and women in leadership. Together, TD and the Connecticut Sun will continue fostering an environment where women can thrive and excel.”
Lasting Impact and Opportunities
Events like “Bank on Her” connect the Connecticut Sun’s mission of promoting community, teamwork, and growth with TD Bank’s expertise in financial education and access. The positive response and engaged participation show how vital it is to prepare the next generation, especially young women, for healthy financial futures and leadership roles.
The “Bank on Her” event highlights how sports, corporate partners, and local organizations can work together to inspire, educate, and build self-confidence in young girls—laying the groundwork for lifelong success and empowerment.
