On April 26, 2022, the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) returned to in-person celebrations at New York’s iconic Plaza Hotel for the 45th Annual American Image Awards, bringing together some of the most influential leaders across fashion, retail, manufacturing, and sustainability. The event recognized individuals and organizations driving innovation and progress throughout the global apparel and footwear industry.
Hosted by television personality and journalist Segun Oduolowu, the evening honored industry leaders including Chip Bergh as Person of the Year, Gap Inc. as Company of the Year, Prabal Gurung as Designer of the Year, ThirdLove as Fashion Maverick, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Fashion Initiative as Eco-Steward of the Year. The event continued its longstanding partnership supporting the Council of Fashion Designers of America Foundation.
Beyond the awards themselves, the evening served as a reflection of an industry emerging from the challenges of the pandemic with a renewed focus on sustainability, innovation, and responsible growth. Executives, designers, and industry stakeholders gathered under one roof to celebrate not only business success but also the evolving role fashion plays in shaping culture and commerce.
For me, the event carried a personal significance. I had the opportunity to style host Segun Oduolowu for the evening, contributing to a presentation that reflected the sophistication and energy of one of the fashion industry’s most respected award ceremonies. Seeing Segun take the stage before a room filled with industry leaders was a proud moment and a reminder of the important role image and storytelling continue to play within fashion.
I was also honored to attend alongside designer Kenny Kas Flanagan, experiencing firsthand the conversations, connections, and celebrations that define the American Image Awards. The event brought together a unique cross-section of fashion executives, creatives, media professionals, and entrepreneurs, highlighting the collaborative nature of the industry at its highest level. Getty Images coverage from the evening captured both Segun Oduolowu and Kenny Kas Flanagan among the attendees at the Plaza Hotel.
More than an awards ceremony, the 2022 American Image Awards demonstrated how fashion continues to evolve through leadership, innovation, and partnership. As the industry navigates new consumer expectations and global challenges, events like AAFA’s flagship gala remain an important platform for recognizing those shaping the future of apparel, footwear, and retail.
