Columbia Sportswear is making a clear leadership play at a crucial time for fashion-forward boots.

The company has named industry veteran Joe Vernachio as president of Sorel, effective June 22. The move signals a push to scale Sorel while sharpening its position at the intersection of function, fashion and winter lifestyle.

A familiar leader with deep outdoor roots

Vernachio is not new to the Columbia universe. He led Mountain Hardwear, another Columbia brand, from 2017 to 2021. That experience means he already understands Columbia’s culture, expectations and decision-making rhythm. He can move faster than an outside hire.

His résumé also runs through some of the biggest names in performance and lifestyle. He served as global vice president of product and operations at The North Face. Earlier in his career, he held key roles at Nike, Spyder, Roots, Calvin Klein and Patagonia.

That mix of hardcore outdoor and style-driven brands lines up neatly with where Sorel plays today.

From Mountain Hardwear and Allbirds back to Columbia

After Mountain Hardwear, Vernachio joined Allbirds as COO and later became CEO. He led the company through a turbulent chapter that ended with Allbirds selling its footwear assets, intellectual property and brand name to American Exchange Group.

The business then pivoted toward an AI infrastructure focus. That experience gave him firsthand exposure to rapid strategic shifts and tough calls in a crowded market.

Now he returns to Columbia at a brand that is in growth mode, not reset mode. Sorel already owns strong mindshare in cold-weather and fashion boots.

The task is to scale that success, protect the design edge and expand the brand beyond its winter core without losing what makes it distinctive. Vernachio’s mix of operations discipline and product instincts fits that brief.

Why Columbia wanted Vernachio at Sorel

Columbia CEO and chair Tim Boyle called Vernachio a “terrific leader” who can build on Sorel’s existing work, talent and momentum.

That phrasing suggests confidence in the current team and strategy, with Vernachio brought in to accelerate rather than overhaul. It also underscores the importance of continuity inside Columbia’s broader portfolio.

Craig Zanon, EVP for Europe Direct, Asia Direct and Emerging Brands, highlighted Vernachio as a consumer‑focused, collaborative leader with a deep passion for product and brand storytelling.

For Sorel, that likely means sharper narratives around key styles, more disciplined positioning between technical and fashion lines, and cleaner storytelling at retail and online. In a crowded comfort-luxury space, that kind of clarity can separate a must-have boot from just another cozy option.

What this means for Sorel’s next chapter

Sorel sits right in the middle of several powerful trends: comfort footwear, outdoor-influenced fashion and year-round boot and clog wear. Consumers want pieces that handle weather and city streets while still feeling stylish in travel, commuting and social settings. Sorel has already tapped into that demand with recognizable silhouettes and bold, tactile designs.

Vernachio’s challenge will be to grow that appeal without diluting it. His background suggests more focus on fit, material innovation and durability, paired with tighter seasonal stories and clearer hero products.

Expect more emphasis on versatile styles that move from snow to street, and possibly a stronger summer and shoulder-season offering to reduce Sorel’s winter-heavy profile.

For Columbia Sportswear Company, the appointment sends a simple message: Sorel is a core growth engine, not a side label. Putting a leader with deep outdoor, lifestyle and turnaround experience in charge shows that the brand intends to compete aggressively in the modern footwear and fashion landscape where craft, comfort and style now have to show up in every single pair.
