Synergy Sports Capital, the $150 million private equity fund co led by former NFL players Terrence C. Murphy Sr. and Reggie Bush, has acquired operating rights for LOVB Salt Lake, League One Volleyball’s Utah based professional team. The deal marks one of the fund’s first moves since its inaugural launch and adds professional women’s volleyball to a portfolio built around high growth emerging sports leagues.
The LOVB Model
Founded in 2020, LOVB operates as a fully integrated volleyball ecosystem, connecting youth clubs, collegiate pathways, and professional competition under one national brand. The pro league launched its first season in January 2025, and LOVB Salt Lake is now in its second season. One in five players across the league is an Olympian, 75% have national team experience, and athletes represent more than 21 countries.
The Salt Lake Roster
LOVB Salt Lake fields a competitive roster that includes two time Olympic medalists Jordyn Poulter and Haleigh Washington, Japan’s 2024 Olympian and reigning LOVB Libero of the Year Manami Kojima, and University of Utah All American Dani Drews. The team added 2025 NCAA champion Ifenna Cos Okpalla (Texas A&M) and BYU All American Alexa Gray this season. Utah’s volleyball pipeline runs deep; nearly 1,000 athletes compete across the state’s local LOVB youth clubs.
A Personal and Strategic Play
Murphy, a part time Park City, Utah resident and youth club volleyball parent, has been a long term believer in LOVB’s club to pro model. Terrence C. Murphy Sr., Founder and Managing Partner of Synergy Sports Capital, said, “Salt Lake has everything you want in a winning organization, a talented team with great chemistry, a passionate and growing sports market, and a culture that values grit and competitiveness.” Synergy’s broader strategy targets controlling stakes in lower middle market emerging leagues, building integrated platforms across team ownership, real estate, media, and operations.
What it signals
Sandra Idehen, Commissioner of LOVB Pro, said, “Terrence, Reggie, and the Synergy team understand the journey of elite athletes, the cultural power of sports, and how to build businesses that last. Their investment in LOVB and leadership of the Salt Lake team strengthens our foundation as we build the next great professional league in America.”
The acquisition fits a wider pattern of athlete led capital flowing into professional women’s sports, where league valuations and sponsorship interest have grown sharply since 2023. For LOVB, adding ownership groups with strong regional ties and media credibility strengthens the league’s foundation as it heads into its expansion phase, with Los Angeles, Minnesota, and San Francisco markets already confirmed.
