Embracing the “Mebounds” Label
By now, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese has heard the criticisms of her game. Much of it centers on the idea that she’s only good at grabbing rebounds especially her own missed shots. As the Sky (3-7) have struggled early this season, the noise has grown louder, even inspiring a new term: “Mebounds”.
Rather than take offense, Reese who just notched her first career triple-double has embraced the attention. She’s even applied to trademark “mebounds.”
Angel Reese, said: “Whoever came up with the ‘mebounds’ thing, y’all ate that up because ‘mebounds,’ rebounds, ‘crebounds’ … anything that comes off that board, it’s mine. And a brand? That’s six figures right there.”
From Podcast Joke to Trademark
The phrase “mebounds” originated on the Club 520 podcast, hosted by Jeff Teague, DJ Wells, and Brandon “Bishop B Hen” Hendricks. Hendricks jokingly called Reese’s rebounds “mebounds” because of her skill at securing her own misses. While Hendricks later clarified he wasn’t “hating,” the phrase caught fire online, and Reese quickly moved to capitalize.
Reese’s team filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. If approved, fans could soon see “mebounds” apparel on the market.
Record-Breaking Rookie Impact
Despite the mockery, Reese’s stats are undeniable. In her 2024 rookie season, she averaged 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists over 34 games. Her 13.1 rebounds per game led the league and set a new WNBA single-season record.
She broke Sylvia Fowles’ rebounding record with a 17-point, 19-rebound game against the Minnesota Lynx. Although A’ja Wilson later surpassed that mark after Reese’s injury, Reese also became the first player to record three consecutive games with 20-plus rebounds and set the record for most consecutive double-doubles at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in 15 straight games.
Turning Trolls Into Triumph
Angel Reese, said: “The trolling? I love when y’all do it because, like, the ideas be good. Like, when y’all have to alter my face and [expletive] because I’m cute, all right, whatever. That doesn’t get me. But when y’all came up with ‘mebounds’ — because statistically, all the rebounds that I get aren’t always just mine. They’re, like, the defense’s, too, or somebody else on my team. But, when y’all came up with ‘mebounds,’ y’all ate …”
The trademark filing capped a big weekend for Reese, who recorded her first WNBA triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists in Chicago’s 78-66 win over the Connecticut Sun.
Laughing All the Way to the Bank
For Angel Reese, turning a term meant to mock her into a potential business is the ultimate power move one that lets her, almost literally, laugh all the way to the bank.
