Converse is expanding its India footprint with its first offline store in Kolkata. The store is opening at South City Mall in partnership with local distributor Bhaane Group. The move brings the 115 year old brand into what it calls a key creative hub in East India. Here, a young consumer base is already engaged with sneakers, music, and street culture.

First Step into the City of Joy

The new Kolkata location marks Converse’s debut brick and mortar presence in the city. This comes after building awareness online. Additionally, there was brand promotion through other metros. The store sits inside South City Mall in Jadavpur, a high traffic complex. The mall has become a go to for fashion and lifestyle brands targeting the wider region.

Brand communications frame Kolkata as a crucial creative hub. The city’s youth culture aligns with Converse’s mix of fashion, sound, and street. Therefore, it is a logical next stop after launches in cities like Mumbai and Chennai.

Store Design and Assortment

The South City Mall store features an open façade and layout. It is designed to let shoppers explore at their own pace. The layout avoids pushing them through a rigid product grid. Inside, the offer brings together Converse icons and newer silhouettes in one space: Chuck Taylor All Star, Chuck 70, Chuck Taylor low tops, All Star Classic Suede, and running inspired styles such as Omega Trainers.

Positioned as an all gender store, the location serves both men and women. It is expected to rotate seasonal colourways and limited drops. This will help keep pace with India’s growing sneaker culture.

India Growth and Regional Strategy

Converse has been steadily building its India presence through a mix of e commerce and brick and mortar, including earlier store openings in Mumbai and Chennai via the same Bhaane Group partnership. The Kolkata debut extends that network eastward, giving the brand a stronger national footprint and easier access to consumers who still prefer to try on footwear in person before buying.

For Bhaane Group, adding South City Mall to the map fits a pattern of placing Converse in high visibility, youth oriented retail environments where apparel, music, and sneaker scenes intersect.

Why This Matters

Kolkata’s first Converse store arrives at a moment when India’s sneaker and lifestyle footwear market is still growing from a relatively low base, but is seeing rapid adoption in tier 1 and tier 2 cities. Having physical points of sale alongside official e commerce gives brands like Converse more control over pricing, authenticity, and storytelling, critical factors as more global labels compete for the same young, style conscious consumer.

The new South City Mall location means direct access to seasonal Chucks and newer silhouettes without relying on multi brand retailers or grey market channels.
