Naomi Osaka is turning her return to Indian Wells into a fashion moment, stepping back onto the WTA tour in custom fashion armour by New York based jeweler Chris Habana layered over her Nike match kit.

Fashion For The Desert

For Indian Wells and the Miami Open, Osaka will wear her usual Nike performance dresses and separates, but she and Habana have built a set of add ons, ear cuffs, grills, gloves, and more, that she describes as layers of protection helping her lock into a competitive mindset. The pieces are designed to evolve across rounds, with Osaka mixing and matching combinations based on mood to keep each entrance visually distinct.

From an Ear Cuff to a Full Set

The collaboration started with a practical idea: Osaka wanted an ear cuff that would hold her earbuds securely during warm ups and still look polished on camera. From there, she and Habana expanded into fingerless mesh gloves with claw like gold details, lip and nose jewelry, and other tribal leaning metal forms that nod to armor without restricting movement.

Storytelling With Nike at The Core

Osaka and her creative director, Marty Harper, are careful to design around Nike’s kits rather than overtake them, treating the apparel as the base layer and Habana’s jewelry as the narrative frame. She told Vogue she loves when fashion brings about a touch of mystery and hopes viewers are curious enough to ask who designed the accessories and why they’re on a tennis court in the first place.

Tennis as a Runway

For Habana, dressing Osaka for Indian Wells is an extension of the stage work he usually does for performers: he compares her walk onto court to a runway entrance that needs to make an immediate visual impact and tell a story. The result is a look that sits between sport and editorial, a cheetah print Nike dress and sneakers, custom gold cuffs and grills, and a Mad Max meets desert brief, that underscores Osaka’s status as one of the few players actively building a fashion universe around her game.
