Nike is releasing a special edition sneaker to celebrate Deion Sanders’ historic achievement of playing in both an NFL and MLB game on the same day.
Deion Sanders is truly a “one-of-one” talent. From electrifying punt returns and game-changing interceptions to starring as a professional in two major sports leagues, “Prime Time” has left a legacy that may never be matched. Now, Nike is paying tribute to his legendary feat with the Nike Air DT Proto 92 “Braves”, a sneaker that honors the iconic “Deion Double Play.”
Nike said: “The retro Nike Air DT Proto '92 is inspired by the day Deion Sanders suited up for both the Atlanta Falcons and Braves in October 1992.”
Celebrating a Day for the History Books
On October 11, 1992, Deion Sanders did the impossible—he played for the Atlanta Falcons in an NFL game during the afternoon and then flew to Pittsburgh to join the Atlanta Braves for a National League Championship Series game that same night. The Nike Air DT Proto 92 “Braves” is designed to capture the spirit and energy of that unforgettable day.
Nike said: “This special edition pays tribute to that defining moment in sports history with a bold, city-exclusive drop rumored to be limited to under 1,000 pairs. It will release exclusively in Atlanta during MLB All-Star Weekend.”
Prototype Brought to Life
The Air DT Proto 92 “Braves” isn’t just another retro—it’s a prototype that never saw a public release until now. This model retains the DNA of the original Diamond Turf line but brings back unique design features that were previously shelved. The sneaker boasts a black nubuck and mesh upper, white Swooshes, gold accents, and a striking red sockliner. The iconic “NIKE” strap and Deion’s “Prime Time” logo on the tongue complete the look.
Nice Kicks said: “The Proto 92, even more so than the more well-known Diamond Turf 1, is a throwback to Nike’s renaissance. The white logos, red sock liner, on a mostly black nubuck material with Deion’s signature gold, this model harkens back to the 1990-1994 design tendencies that made Nike the ‘King of the Hill’ they still are.”
A Colorway with a Story
Some fans may wonder why the “Braves” edition features so much black, since the Atlanta Braves’ official colors don’t include it. But in 1992, league rules required most shoes to be black or white, and many players—including Sanders—wore black, red, and white cleats with their uniforms. The chosen colorway is a nod to the era’s style and practicality.
Sneaker News said: “Most major sports leagues in 1992 still adhered to mostly black or mostly white. Also, from a practical standpoint, navy next to black is a poor design choice as those colors bleed into each other. In turn, Nike and Sanders have opted to keep to the blk/red/wht colorway worn by Braves at the time.”
Limited Atlanta Release
Nike hasn’t announced a full national release yet, but sneaker insiders report that a shock drop is planned for Atlanta during Major League Baseball’s All-Star break, between July 12–15. Only 1,000 pairs will be available, making this one of the most exclusive sneaker drops of the year. Past Deion Sanders releases have been held at Lenox Square, so history could repeat itself.
Kicks on Fire said: “The sneaker is rumored to be limited to under 1,000 pairs and will reportedly drop exclusively in Atlanta during the MLB All-Star Weekend.”
A wider release for the Nike Air DT Proto 92 “Black” is expected in Fall 2025 at select retailers and Nike.com, with a retail price of $155.
For fans of Deion Sanders, Atlanta sports, or sneaker history, the Nike Air DT Proto 92 “Braves” is more than just a shoe—it’s a piece of sports folklore brought to life. As Sanders himself put it:
Deion Sanders said: “I told you ‘We were Coming’! #CoachPrime @nike @nikefootball.”
Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of “Prime Time” history.
