Columbia Sportswear is reviving a legend with the very limited reintroduction of the Bugaboot 1, an iconic 1993 outdoor boot designed by Peter Moore, melding retro appeal with cutting-edge technology for today’s adventurers.
Heritage Meets Innovation (The Bugaboot 1 Returns)
Launching October 14 for Columbia Greater Rewards members and opening to the public the following day, the Bugaboot 1 is a true piece of Columbia and sneaker culture history. Only 1,993 pairs will be available globally, each individually numbered for one-of-one exclusivity and outfitted with custom packaging, a keychain, and matching tissue paper to commemorate the moment.
The shoe’s reintroduction honors a transformative collaboration, created by Columbia founder Gert Boyle, CEO Tim Boyle, and acclaimed footwear innovator Peter Moore (known for designing the Air Jordan 1 and key adidas icons). Moore’s creative legacy, consulting genius, and deep involvement are celebrated by his sons Hagen and Devin, who helped shepherd this modern revival as a tribute to their father’s vision.
Crafted for the Trail—and the Culture
The Bugaboot was engineered as an extension of Columbia’s renowned Bugaboo 3-in-1 jacket, merging the ruggedness of a duck boot with the comfort and agility of an athletic shoe. This 2025 edition pays homage to that original hybrid spirit by pairing legacy look and feel with today’s top outdoor innovations:
-
Techlite lightweight cushioning for comfort and impact absorption
-
Omni-Grip advanced traction to handle any weather or surface
-
Durable materials and heritage details that honor the past while elevating performance for present-day explorers.
Design Legacy (A Family and Cultural Tribute)
Peter Moore left an indelible mark on global sneaker culture. The Bugaboot was his first Columbia creation after trailblazing work at Nike and adidas.
Tim Boyle, Chairman, President & CEO, Columbia Sportswear, said:
“Delivering a functional outdoor boot that reflected Columbia’s rugged, innovative spirit was critical. Peter was our first and only call. He and Gert shared an obsession with problem-solving through design, making him a natural partner to help launch this new chapter. Today, we honor Peter’s immeasurable legacy and celebrate Columbia’s own history in performance footwear alongside Peter’s sons, Hagen and Devin, who were instrumental in bringing this new project to life.”
Hagen Moore, Co-Founder of Boom Pow Bang Creative Agency and son of Peter Moore, said:
“This project means a lot to our family. My dad poured his heart into everything he worked on, and the Bugaboot was no exception. To see Columbia bring it back with so much care and respect for our father’s original design while pushing it forward with today’s tech is something we know he would’ve been incredibly proud of.”
Where and How to Get Yours
The Bugaboot 1 will be available at Columbia.com, select global retailers (including Complex, Lapstone & Hammer, Packer, Solefly, West, and Wish), and at columbia.com/t/drops. This one-of-a-kind release is expected to sell out quickly; fans and collectors should act fast for a piece of outdoor and design history.
Columbia’s relaunch of the Bugaboot 1 is both a nostalgic celebration and a bold step forward for industry innovation, showing that great design, anchored by purpose and storytelling, never goes out of style.
