Google is taking virtual shopping to the next level. The tech giant has officially announced that its AI-powered Virtual Try-On tool which lets shoppers upload a full-length photo to see how real clothes look on them is expanding into an all-new category: shoes.
For the first time, shoppers will be able to visualize how different styles of footwear look on themselves before ever adding to cart — answering the age-old question: “Can I pull these off?” The feature is also going global, with availability rolling out beyond the United States to Australia, Canada, and Japan in the coming weeks.
How It Works
Google’s Virtual Try-On for Shoes is built directly into Google Shopping, creating an instant, realistic preview experience. Here’s how customers can use it:
- Search for shoes on Google Shopping. Look for listings that display the “Try it On” icon next to the product image.
- Tap “Try it On.” The feature will prompt you to upload a full-length photo of yourself, ideally in an outfit you might pair with those shoes.
- See the AI-powered preview. Within seconds, Google’s advanced imaging technology places the shoes on your photo, adapting to your pose, lighting, and proportions to show a realistic visualization.
- Save or share your look. You can tap the share icon at the top of your try-on image to send it to friends, save it for later, or show it off on social media for a second opinion.
The expansion into footwear marks a major milestone for Google’s retail technology. The AI-driven experience uses depth perception and shape modeling to capture how shoes would look from your unique perspective — taking into account your stance, outfit, and silhouette for a more accurate, life-like result. Beyond aesthetics, the technology aims to bridge confidence gaps in online shopping, where footwear fit and styling uncertainty often lead to hesitation or returns.
As consumers continue to embrace hybrid shopping habits, Google’s latest update positions virtual try-ons as a key conversion driver for fashion and footwear brands looking to engage shoppers through richer, more interactive digital experiences.
Following strong engagement in the U.S., Google is now expanding Virtual Try-On availability to Australia, Canada, and Japan, enabling international shoppers to access the same tools that have already transformed apparel browsing. The update highlights Google’s growing investment in AI-powered personalization and retail visualization, setting the stage for what could become the industry’s most widely used try-on platform.
As Google continues to refine its AI technology, this launch signals a new era of digital retail where browsing, trying, and buying merge into a single seamless experience.
