Nike has made history by unveiling its first collaboration with an Indian fashion label, teaming up with Delhi-based NorBlack NorWhite for a vibrant collection inspired by India’s ancient tie-dye technique, bandhani. The new range, which includes patterned sportswear and footwear, “invites women into sport” while celebrating “Indian culture and craftsmanship,” according to a Nike press release.
A Fusion of Sport, Story, and Indian Heritage
This limited-edition collection is a bold crossover between Nike’s performance essentials and the intricate, geometric patterns of bandhani, a hand-dyeing technique believed to date back 5,000 years. The collection features a hoodie, tank top, cropped T-shirt, sports bras, shorts, tights, a cross-body bag, and four sneaker silhouettes, including the Nike Air Max Craze, Motiva, Pegasus 41, and Calm slide.
“Nike and NorBlack NorWhite applied the look of bandhani, a traditional Indian tie-dye technique, to sport-forward silhouettes designed to move with women throughout their everyday lives whether they’re in the gym, on the move or unwinding in style,” Nike said.
Founded by Canadian-born designers Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit Kumar, NorBlack NorWhite has built its reputation on blending streetwear with traditional Indian crafts. The brand’s journey, as described by its founders, has always been about “storytelling, colour, and identity,” not just fashion for fashion’s sake.
“Our NorBlack NorWhite journey started with a deep admiration for the crafts practices of India and the people who bring them to life,” Mriga Kapadiya, cofounder, said. “This collection shines a light on the rigor, dedication and ancestral knowledge that’s rooted in Indian culture, and we hope each piece inspires women to draw into their own athletic mindset while navigating everyday life in India and around the world.”
“When women wear pieces from our new collection with Nike, we want them to feel comfortable in their own skin, wherever they are in their journey,” Amrit Kumar, cofounder, said. “We want them to feel cool and collected through the colors, and to be ready to take on challenges and build strength and resilience through the patterns. Women who wear these pieces should have fun and own the spectrum of hues — all knowing that we, as women, aren’t here to play.”
Spotlighting Indian Female Athletes
The campaign, shot by renowned photographer Bharat Sikka in Jaipur, features Indian cricketers Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma, wrestler Anshu Malik, and sprinter Priya Mohan. The imagery captures these athletes in the city’s iconic stepwells, blending heritage, athleticism, and contemporary style.
“What really hits different from other campaigns is that this collaboration is designed right here in India by a local collective that gets our vibe,” Jemimah Rodrigues said. “Wearing Nike that’s laced with Indian culture is a flex. It’s bold, rooted and ours. As a woman in a sport that’s often seen through a male lens, being part of a campaign like this is my way of saying, ‘We’re not just showing up, we’re here to take over, win big and look fab while doing it.’”
A Strategic Move for Nike in India
This collaboration comes as Nike renews its focus on the Indian market after years of restructuring, store closures, and business partner changes. The brand, which once operated over 350 stores in India, now lists just 93, highlighting the significance of this new partnership as a way to reconnect with local consumers and new generations.
Nike’s recent campaigns have increasingly spotlighted women’s sport, and this collection with a female-owned Indian label further demonstrates its commitment to empowering women and celebrating diverse cultures.
“Fifteen years ago when NBNW was born, we couldn’t imagine bringing our love for bandhani (tie-dye) into the sports arena, but here we are and it’s feeling too beautiful. Grateful for everyone who brought this to life,” cofounders, Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit Kumar said.
The Nike x NorBlack NorWhite collection is available now on Nike.com and select stores worldwide.
